Verizon FiOS is a fiber-optic service for your home cable, phone and internet. The service is similar to any other home internet that runs off fiber-optic cable, which is the fastest internet option available. FiOS offers wireless internet that runs off a router. The router is connected to the hard line, and it transmits the wireless signal.
Why Add a Second Router?
The reasoning for a second router is often a matter of security or need based on location. For example, a business might use a single router access point for public use and a second for a secure network that is intended for business use only. A coffee shop is one common business type that will use this system. A public library is not a business, but it will operate in a similar manner.
Using the network in a large space may also call for a second router to ensure a strong signal is accessible across the entire building. A hotel can use multiple routers throughout the building to provide a strong signal and access to the same network while connecting multiple routers to that network.
In a home, having a second router is not common, but some households may require the improved capabilities. They also may just want to separate into two networks for personal reasons. If one family member is using heavy data and requires a security upgrade, he can operate off a separate router.
Initial Verizon Wireless Router Setup
Start by setting up your first router. Plug the yellow Ethernet cord into the color-coded port on the router and plug the free end into your wall Ethernet outlet. Plug the router into power to activate the wireless signal.
Open a computer and access your wi-fi settings to locate the available networks. The wireless settings are written on the back of your router. The network should show up as ESSID and you can use the password WPA2. This launches you on the temporary network.
Open a web browser, and visit activatemyfios.verizon.net to enter the setup process. This is where you will set up your network name, password and any custom settings.
Secondary Router Setup
The secondary router extends your wireless capabilities. It is especially useful on a busy network where multiple users are active at the same time. You can connect Netgear routers to Verizon FiOS or use another brand, if desired. Using a second FiOS router is the easiest approach, but other brands are compatible with a workaround.
If you have a different brand, you must set up the IP to match the Verizon network. Connect an Ethernet cord between your computer and the primary FiOS router. Choose Run from the Startup menu and type CMD. Hit Enter to trigger the command prompt window. Type ipconfig, and then press enter again.
Write down or screen-shot the Gateway and Subnet Mask. Remove the Ethernet end from the primary router, and plug it into the second router. Note the IP Address written on the back of your FiOS Router. Enter this into a web browser.
Enter your username and password to open the settings. Choose to set a static IP Address. This means it will not interfere with the primary IP on the FiOS router. Write in your recorded Gateway and Subnet Mask info. For the IP Address, use 192.168.1.1 to match the FiOS Verizon router IP. Apply the settings.
Reboot the New System
Shut down your computer and both routers. Make sure everything is connected properly, and reboot everything. The changes should take effect and the second router will act as an extension of the network. It increases the number of users allowed on the network and increases your overall range if when placed in a different location in the home or building.

HELP! I am working with a friend who has a Verizon Westel 6110F Bridge Modem. We are on the central coast of California. The services assigns DHCP addresses. The DLink 614+ Wireless Router worked great with the service. It snagged an IP address from Verizon and happily assigned 192.168.1.xx DHCP addresses to connected devices. The DLink got unplugged for several hours.... so far, no problem. I had the friend plug his computer directly into the Westel 6110F DSL modem and he was up and running.

Ip Address For Verizon Modem
Several hours later, I went by. I found the DLINK not plugged in and plugged it in and all lights came on, so far, so good. I then unplugged the PC from the Westel 6110F and plugged it back into the DLINK. I then plugged the DLINK back into the DSL Modem. Here's the serious problem. The Westel 611-F DSL modem will NOT assign the DLINK an IP address. I've tried another router and same result. The router simply cannot obtain an iP address from the DSL modem. Then, I plug the PC directly back into the DSL modem, and the PC can get a DHCP IP address assigned to the PC just fine.
Tried replacing the cable between the DLINK WAN port and DSL modem with a crossover cable, no luck. Tried another straight thru Ethernet cable, no luck. Now I'm back to the original configuration and cables and the issue continues. No problem with the PC getting assigned an IP and gateway address directly from the DSL Modem, but both my router cannot get an address. I've dried using the Router's DHCP Release and Renew buttons. The release says it works, but Renew times out every time.
Could really use some help here.
